Retinol for Beginners: How to Start Without the Irritation
Retinol has a reputation. It is the ingredient most people have heard works, and the one most people have quit after two weeks of redness and peeling. Both things are true. The difference is almost always in how you start.
What Retinol Does
Retinol is a form of vitamin A. On the skin, it speeds up cell turnover: older cells at the surface make way for newer ones faster than they would on their own. Over time, that shows up as smoother texture, softer lines and a more even tone. Marks left behind by old breakouts fade more quickly.
It is not instant. Retinol works over weeks, not days. That is also why consistency matters more than strength.
Why It Can Irritate
Faster renewal asks a lot of the skin barrier. Use too much, too often, too soon, and the skin answers with dryness, tightness and flaking. Most people read that as "retinol is not for me". Usually it means the start was too fast, or the formula gave the barrier nothing back.
How to Start
- Evenings only. Retinol belongs in your night routine.
- Clean, completely dry skin. Damp skin takes up more than it should.
- A small amount. Two to three drops are enough for the whole face.
- Two to three nights a week. Stay there for the first few weeks, then add a night when your skin feels comfortable.
- Moisturise afterwards. Follow with a cream that supports the barrier.
- Sunscreen every morning. Skin on retinol is more sensitive to the sun. This step is not optional.
On retinol nights, skip exfoliating acids. One active at a time is plenty.

What to Expect
- Weeks 1 to 2: your skin may feel slightly different as it adjusts. That is normal.
- Week 4: texture starts to shift. Skin feels smoother under your fingers.
- Week 8: tone looks more even, and other people start to notice.
If your skin feels sore or stays red, pause for a few nights and go back to fewer evenings. Going slowly is not a setback. It is how retinol is meant to be used.
Why We Pair Retinol with Snail Mucin
When we developed our Intensive Renewal Serum No. 1, we wanted a retinol we could actually stick with. So we put it in the same formula as snail secretion filtrate. The retinol renews. The snail mucin cushions the barrier and keeps the skin calm enough to let it. We wrote more about that ingredient in how snail filtrate actually works.
In the morning, a day cream with snail mucin and niacinamide, like our Regenerating Day Cream No. 1, keeps the barrier supported while the retinol does its work at night.
Good to Know
Can I use retinol every night? Some skin gets there, some never needs to. Build up slowly and let your skin decide.
Can I use it around the eyes? The skin there is thinner. We use a separate product for that area: our Precision Eye Essence No. 1 with bakuchiol, a plant-based alternative to retinol.
What if I am pregnant or breastfeeding? Retinol is generally not recommended during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Ask your doctor or midwife.
Retinol rewards patience. Start low, go slowly, protect your skin in the morning, and give it eight weeks before you judge.
