The Golden Rule of Skincare Layering

5 min read

Achieving radiant, healthy skin isn’t only about choosing the right products, it’s about how you apply them. Knowing how to layer skincare products correctly ensures each formula can absorb properly and deliver results. At Magalie&ME, we believe skincare should be effective without being complicated. This guide explains the correct skincare routine order, why it matters, and how to apply skincare products so your routine truly works.

The Golden Rule

If you remember just one thing, let it be this:

“Always layer skincare products from thinnest to thickest consistency.”

Lightweight, water-based products need direct access to the skin. Richer creams and oils create a barrier that seals everything in. Following this skincare layering order allows each product to absorb properly and perform as intended.

There are a few exceptions, which we’ll cover later, but for most routines, this rule applies.

With the core principles in place, let’s walk through the complete skincare routine order, morning and evening.

The Complete Layering Order

Morning Routine

  1. Cleanser: Start with a clean canvas. A gentle, pH-balanced cleanser removes overnight oil and refreshes the skin without stripping it. Morning cleansing should be light: your skin isn’t dirty, it’s simply resetting.
  2. Toner or Essence: Toners and essences rebalance the skin and improve absorption. Toners are typically lighter, while essences are slightly more concentrated. Press them into the skin with your hands rather than using cotton pads to avoid unnecessary product waste.
  3. Treatment Serums (Thinnest to Thickest): This is where targeted care happens: hydration, brightness, barrier support, or repair. If using more than one serum: apply water-based serums first and follow with thicker or oil-based formulas. In most routines, two to three serums are enough. Allow 30–60 seconds between layers.
  4. Eye Cream: The skin around the eyes is thinner and more delicate, which is why eye products are formulated differently. Apply eye cream before moisturiser so it can absorb properly. Use your ring finger and gently tap along the orbital bone.
  5. Moisturiser: Moisturiser seals in hydration and supports the skin barrier. Choose a texture that suits your skin type: lighter for oily skin, richer for dry or mature skin. Even oily skin needs moisturiser.
  6. Facial Oil (Optional): If used, apply facial oil after moisturiser to lock everything in.
  7. Sunscreen (Non-Negotiable): Sunscreen is always the final step in your morning routine. Apply generously, roughly a nickel-sized amount for the face, plus extra for the neck and chest. This step matters every day, all year round.

Evening Routine

  1. First Cleanse (Oil-Based Cleanser): Oil cleansers dissolve makeup, sunscreen, and excess sebum, things water alone can’t remove. Massage onto dry skin for 30–60 seconds, then emulsify and rinse.
  2. Second Cleanse (Water-Based Cleanser): The second cleanse removes remaining residue, leaving skin truly clean without disrupting the barrier.
  3. Exfoliant (2–3 Times Per Week): Chemical exfoliants or gentle physical exfoliants remove dead skin cells and support renewal. On exfoliation nights, this step replaces toner. Avoid using exfoliants and retinol in the same routine. Alternate nights instead.
  4. Toner or Essence: Restores balance after cleansing and prepares the skin for treatment.
  5. Treatment Serums: Nighttime is ideal for reparative ingredients. If using retinol:
    • Apply to completely dry skin
    • Start slowly (2–3 nights per week)
    • Avoid combining with exfoliating acids
  6. Eye Cream: A richer eye cream can be used at night for added comfort.
  7. Moisturiser: Night moisturisers can be more nourishing since makeup compatibility isn’t a concern.
  8. Facial Oil or Sleeping Mask (Optional): Use when skin feels dry, stressed, or depleted for overnight support.

Special Cases and Gentle Exceptions

Some products require a different skincare application order. Prescription treatments should always be applied according to your dermatologist’s instructions.

You may also hear that you need to wait long periods between every skincare step. In reality, most products only need a short pause, just long enough to absorb. The main exceptions are:

  • Let skin dry completely before applying retinol
  • Allow time after exfoliating before layering additional actives

Outside of these moments, skincare doesn’t need to be slow or complicated to be effective.

Where Our Products Fit

Our own ritual follows the same order, in three steps.

  1. Prepare: Cleansing Oil No. 1 on dry skin, then Balancing Toner No. 1, pressed in rather than rubbed.
  2. Regenerate: Precision Eye Essence No. 1 morning and evening, Intensive Renewal Serum No. 1 at night, and Radiance Repair Day Cream No. 2 in the morning when tone needs evening out.
  3. Restore: Regenerating Day Cream No. 1 in the morning, to hold on to hydration and support the barrier. Then sunscreen.

New to retinol? Read how to start without the irritation. Not sure which combination suits you? Start with the routine for dry, combination or sensitive skin.
